8-Ball Almanac Launch Party Tonight, "Red, White, Yellow, and Black" Panel Tomorrow at The Kitchen, and Speciwomen Photo Book Sale on Sunday!
Non-profit indie publisher 8-Ball Community celebrates its launch of its 10-year book catalogue and non-boy artist/photographer magazine Speciwomen hosts another special book sale on Sunday + more!
Hi all!
This will be a relatively short list as I didn’t mention them in my issue earlier this week. Enjoy!
8-Ball Almanac launch party at Entrance (48 Ludlow St. in basement)
Tonight, 3/10 6pm-9pm and Tomorrow, 3/11 12pm-6pm
If you didn’t already grab your copy of this marvelous document of one of New York City’s most important contemporary underground art cultures, this is your chance. You’ll find an extensive assortment of interviews with volunteers like myself and photographs from the last decade of events, programming and so on. The celebrations Friday night will include some interviews with some very dear and special friends! :-)
"There are fewer than 100 copies of the 8-Ball Almanac left for sale, and it will never be printed again. We'll have some posters, photos, and other ephemera up, plus we'll be having a few special interviews Friday night.
Sasha Frere-Jones will be in conversation with Lele Saveri, Yoma, Mason Wilson, and ML Hassan about 8-Ball history.”
Panel Conversation; Red, White, Yellow, and Black: 1972—73 at The Kitchen at Westbeth (163B Bank St., 4th Fl. Loft)
Tomorrow, 3/11 3pm; Show on view until 4/29
I wanted to highlight this panel discussion happening in light of The Kitchen’s recently opened exhibition. I'm grateful for my friend Sahar for letting me know about this beautiful show highlighting the 50th anniversary of a collective of devoted artists; you may see them working at the gallery when you visit. Unfortunately, the free tickets are sold out, but “an in-person waitlist at Westbeth will begin at 2:30pm prior to the conversation.” In any case, the exhibit is worth seeing! More information about the event and show below.
In conjunction with the exhibition Red, White, Yellow, and Black: 1972—73 , the living members of the collective artists Mary Lucier, Cecilia Sandoval, and Charlotte Warren gather in conversation with co-curators Lumi Tan, former Senior Curator, The Kitchen and Lia Robinson, Director of Programs and Research, Shigeko Kubota Video Art Foundation to reflect on the legacy of the performances and the divergent directions their lives took afterwards.
In December 1972 and April 1973, Shigeko Kubota, Mary Lucier, Cecilia Sandoval and Charlotte Warren conceived of “multimedia concerts” at The Kitchen under the coalition Red, White, Yellow and Black—a name that explicitly associated each member with their cultural identity. Exemplifying their individual activities and backgrounds rather than act as a collective, the four women presented multimedia work which has notably dematerialized after the concerts, and has since been reconstructed only through scholarly text. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of these performances, this exhibition will bring together rarely seen archival material from the evenings in addition to the restaging of Kubota’s first video sculpture, Riverrun- Video Water Poem (1972), and Lucier and Sandoval's The Occasion of Her First Dance and How She Looked (1973).
Book sale at Speciwomen HQ (185 Lafayette Ave., Brooklyn)
Sunday, 3/12 12pm-5pm
I first attended the Speciwomen stoop book sale almost a year ago with artist and close friend Leor Miller, and befriended Speciwomen founder Philo Cohen who curated an excellent selection of books for sale from the organization’s library inside her family’s home. When she’s not managing Speciwomen Magazine, Philo is working downstairs in the basement of Dashwood Books in the store’s archive. Some of the stoop sale’s previous books included vintage Whitney Biennale catalogues, out-of-print artist monographs, and a variety of handmade zines. I was lucky to stumble upon a beautiful and rare Italian catalogue of artist Ana Mendieta’s work before anyone else could get to it. It’s safe to say there’ll be treasures galore. See a sneak peek of the books in this weekend’s sale in the Instagram post below.
That’s all for now. Just wanted to make sure you had your weekend plans set right.
Hope to see you there, and till next time!
