Dear Dave release party & Diane Arbus panel discussion tomorrow night + NYABF free programming!
It turns out events get posted with sooner notice than I expected, and I fall behind so here’s two more events happening tomorrow night that are equally exciting! And, also some free photo-focused programming happening over the weekend local to the New York Art Book Fair!
Dear Dave: Issue 3 Release & Artist Talk at Launch Photo Books. (59 Orchard St.)
Wednesday, 10/12 7pm
My friend Leor recently put me onto Dear Dave magazine, edited by Stephen Frailey. I knew Frailey from his work with Red Hook Labs a few years ago. This issue has an exciting roster of artists including Sasha Phyars-Burgess, Vanessa Kotovich, Paul Gulimoth, an essay from Efrem Zelony-Mindell, among others. DM @deardavemag on Instagram to RSVP. Free.
In Conversation: Sylvia Plachy, Leo Rubinfien, and Lynne Tillman on Diane Arbus at David Zwirner. (537 W. 20th St.)
Wednesday, 10/12 6pm
Per the event details, “a conversation with Sylvia Plachy, Leo Rubinfien, and Lynne Tillman, moderated by Lesley A. Martin, in celebration of the publications Diane Arbus Documents and Diane Arbus Revelations on the experience of Arbus’s work, fifty years on from the initial publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph and her cataclysmic solo exhibition at MoMA.” More info here, https://aperture.org/events/in-conversation-sylvia-plachy-leo-rubinfien-and-lynne-tilllman-on-diane-arbus/. RSVP by emailing events@davidzwirner.com. Free.
I can’t stand to see you cry, with Rahim Fortune at Dia Art Foundation. (536 W 22nd St.)
Friday, 10/14 4pm
Presented & published by Loose Joints. Fortune will be in conversation with Magic Hour publisher and podcast host Jordan Weitzman about his 2021 published book, I can’t stand to see you cry. I learned that this is Fortune’s 2nd publication after having self-published before, so interested in hearing about his process with respect to bookmaking, and his practice more generally. RSVP here, https://artsvp.co/0a932a?collection=aa1553. Free.
We Been Here, with William Camargo, Genesis Báez, and Lindsay Buchman at Dia Art Foundation. (536 W 22nd St.)
Saturday, 10/15 12pm
Presented by Seaton Street Press. I'll be working at the Printed Matter bookstore (come say Hi before/after!) during this, so I'm upset I won't get to see this amazing pairing of artists in conversation with Seaton Street Press publisher Lindsay Buchman. I’ve been looking to hear Camargo speak in NY since his 2020 John Divola response work, and certainly Báez now being awarded the 2022 Capricious Photo Award! RSVP here, https://artsvp.co/44e287?collection=aa1553. Free.
On Latin American Expanded Photography, with Oscar B. Castillo, Diana López, Luis Cobelo, and Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo at Dia Art Foundation. (536 W 22nd St.)
Saturday, 10/15 3pm
Presented by Raya Editorial + La Chancleta Voladora. Instagram account below. Unfortunately, I won’t be available for this artist panel discussion either, so go take notes for me please. RSVP here, https://artsvp.co/143884?collection=aa1553. Free.
Tender Noted and Earnestly, with Shala Miller, Monilola Olayemi Ilupeju, and Corinne Butta
Sunday, 10/16 4pm
Presented by Archive Books. I met the talented Miller from an artist talk in my senior seminar, and have since followed their work obsessively. I got my copy of Tender Noted from Wendy’s Subway’s booth at the recent 8-Ball Community East Village Zine Fair— the cover artwork has recently been on view as part of Black Melancholia exhibit at the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College. RSVP for panel discussion here, https://artsvp.co/9217fd?collection=aa1553. Free.
Keep me posted on anything noteworthy coming up, and I’ll keep you posted here!
:-)
