October 6th - 20th
Lectures with Farah Al Qasimi & Liz Deschenes, Jill Freedman opening, Nan Goldin documentary screening, New York Art Book Fair, + more!
EDIT: I had trouble emailing out the original post, so this is a duplicate copy for email subscribers.
Hi!
My name is Rainer, and the plan is for this to be a bi-weekly newsletter where I share what I think are exciting photography events happening across New York City. I graduated five months ago from Bard College, studied Photography, and am back home in the Lower East Side where I was born and raised. I’ll also be sharing some of my work, seen above. This is the first round-up of events and shows.
Speciwomen Issue 4: I Belong To This signing and release at Dashwood Books. (33 Bond Street)
Thursday, 10/6 6pm - 8pm
I had the pleasure of meeting editor, Philo Cohen at one her Speciwomen library stoop sales, and missed her recent Dashwood signing, so I’m excited to be around for this. Curated by Justine Kurland, many of this issue’s featured artists will be in attendance including Sydney Mieko King, Diana Palermo, Jacky Marshall, Keisha Scarville, Calafia Sánchez-Touzé, Gwen Smith, Wendy Small, and Kurland herself among many others. Issue listed at $20.
Laura Poitras’ All the Beauty and the Bloodshed screening and Q&A at the New York Film Festival. (Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, 1941 Broadway)
Friday, 10/7 6pm, 9:15pm
Poitras’ documentary follows the life of artist Nan Goldin and her fight against the opioid giant Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family. “Poitras’s film is an enthralling, empowering work that stirringly connects personal tragedy, political awareness, and artistic expression” (NYFF). Unfortunately, both screenings are sold out, but there’ll be a stand-by list. So, wish us luck out there. More info here, https://www.filmlinc.org/nyff2022/films/all-the-beauty-and-the-bloodshed/. Ticket price unsure.
Moyra Davey and Jennifer Montgomery in Conversation (Following Montgomery’s Allocution (2022) & Davey’s Les Goddesses (2011) screening) at the Museum of Modern Art. (11 West 53rd Street, Floor T2/T1, Theater 2)
Saturday, 10/8 7:30pm
Accompanying the current survey on Davey’s work, this double-screening and conversation will be definitely informative and awakening. Taken from the event details, “The two artists, who share an unwavering ability to address difficult subject matter with eloquence and purpose, come together to discuss the feminist filmmaking they stem from and the experiences and friendships that have shaped them along the way.” Purchase your tickets ($12 for adults, $8 for students) and find more info here, https://www.moma.org/calendar/events/8137.
Small Editions' 2nd Small Press Picnic at Fort Green Park. (Meeting in the park across from the Brooklyn Hospital Center)
Sunday, 10/9 1pm - 4pm
Based in Brooklyn, I learned about Small Editions from research on local publishers working to help artists make limited publications. If you’re looking to meet a group of like-minded independent book makers, this is the picnic for you. Per the Instagram post, “bring your books and prints to swap!” Link for RSVP here, https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScvAAtcH0uOm4ogeO8Y8FIHSi2lb8zN-arBB4085NLiRNsUAQ/viewform. Check the Instagram post for meeting spot below. Free.
ICP Talks: Farah Al Qasimi at the International Center of Photography. (79 Essex Street & Online)
Tuesday, 10/11 6:30pm - 8pm
I was fortunate to have Al Qasimi as my senior seminar professor, so I’m always looking to hear more about her photographs, and their dreamy and vivid qualities. According to the lecture description, “Al Qasimi will discuss her expansive practice including recent collaboration with Public Art Fund that showcased her photographs of street scenes, interiors of local bodegas, and people from across NYC, on over 100 city bus stations around the city.” The talk is being offered in-person and online, $5— https://www.icp.org/events/icp-talks-farah-al-qasimi.
Carlos Saavedra & Sebastián Ramírez: Madres Terra book launch at the Bronx Documentary Center (364 East 151st Street).
Wednesday, October 12th 7:30pm
From the Instagram post, “Over the last seven years Carlos Saavedra (@carlosaavedra7), photographer, and Sebastián Ramírez, anthropologist, have worked with the Mothers of the False Positives of Soacha and Bogotá (@mafapocolombia) to memorialize the victims of the extrajudicial killings perpetrated by the Colombian army.” The book launch will be a conversation with Ramírez, moderated by the book’s editor and publisher Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo (@escobart). Free.
Firehouse: The Photography of Jill Freedman at the New York City Fire Museum. (278 Spring Street)
Wednesday, 10/12 (Reception unknown)
Sadly, Freedman passed away three years ago, but remains heavily underrated in my opinion. I found a copy of her book Street Cops at an art bookstore, stored on a shelf for rare-books for four-thousand dollars. But I’ll find copies of her book Resurrection City— photographs from the 1968 National Mall occupation— for forty bucks. The show will be up until April 2nd, 2023. Free.
Photography Talk Series: Lis Deschenes at Pratt Institute. (ARC Building, 200 Willoughby Avenue)
Wednesday, 10/12 2pm
Per Pratt’s Instagram post, “If you are not a member of the Pratt Community and you wish to attend this in-person talk, [go here, https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pratt-photography-talk-series-liz-deschenes-tickets-427910681367]. Registration for this event will close at 11:59pm on Monday, October 10.” Follow @prattphotography on Instagram for future events. Free.
Artist Series: Tim Carpenter & Brad Zellar (in Conversation) at the Penumbra Foundation. (36 East 30th Street)
Wednesday, 10/12 7pm
I’ve been looking forward to Penumbra’s artist series— see Susan Lipper below— and to see this conversation between photographer and editor, but also writer and writer. You can RSVP via email by looking for the specific lecture here, https://www.penumbrafoundation.org/artist-series-fall-2022. Free.
The New York Art Book Fair at Printed Matter. (548 West 22nd Street)
Thursday, 10/13 - Sunday, 10/16
This year’s NYABF will be held at the first fair’s Chelsea location, not far from Printed Matter’s flagship store. And instead of past years, entry will be ticketed (PM notes that “No one is turned away for lack of funds”) and they’ll be for specific times— you can purchase a ticket (Free on Sunday, $5 on Friday & Saturday, $30 Thursday opening night) and register for a time-slot here, https://artsvp.co/printedmatter.
Are New Pictures Possible? at the Museum of Modern Art. (Online)
Thursday, 10/13 1:30pm - 3:30pm
This is going to be an exciting panel of artists in conversation including Zora J Murff, Sara Cwynar, Ariel Goldberg, Naima Green, Tyler Mitchell, Wolfgang Tillmans, among many others. This is among other programming made in tandem with Tillman’s retrospective on view now at the museum. No registration needed, Zoom link posted here, https://www.moma.org/calendar/events/8086. Free.
Artist Series: Susan Lipper at the Penumbra Foundation. (36 East 30th Street)
Wednesday, 10/19 7pm
I first discovered Lipper’s work from the great Miwa Suda at Dashwood. I went in looking for landscape work— I had been taking a large-format class— and Suda pulled out her Domesticated Landscapes (2018). Looking forward to learning more about her process. You can RSVP via email by looking for the specific lecture here, https://www.penumbrafoundation.org/artist-series-fall-2022. Free.
