Jack Pierson pop-up gallery, 1960-90s Latin American bookmaking exhibit, Risograph artist book release, LES photo group show, and more!
Bunch of exciting things coming up including exhibits celebrating history of Latin American bookmaking, and conversation between Nan Goldin and Jack Pierson on occasion of his new solo show
Jack Pierson at Elliott Temple Fine Arts (FKA Public Access Gallery)
Tonight until 6pm (excuse my late email), On view through TBD; 105 Henry St.
In some breaking news, artist Jack Pierson who currently has a solo exhibition, Pomegranetes, on view at Lisson Gallery through 10/7, will be taking over the lease of the former Public Access Gallery, started by gallerist Leo Fitzpatrick. There’s not too much available information on how long Pierson will be exhibiting in the space, nor what the new gallery’s name, Elliot Temple Fine Arts, has in store, but according to Fitzpatrick’s post, Pierson’s has said it will be "a scant but potent offering of a few works [from his] personal collection." [Editor’s note, 10/2: The gallery will be open Thursday through Friday, 12-6pm. Exhibition’s end date still unknown.]
Off-Register: Publishing Experiments by Women Artists in Latin America, 1960-1990 Opening Reception, curated by Mela Dávila at Center of Book Arts
Thursday, 10/5 6-8pm, on view through 12/16; 28 W. 27th St. 3rd Fl.
Curator Dávila has brought together a show that “focus[es] on the printed works produced and published by some thirty women artists who originated from or developed their practice in various Latin American countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela – and the Chicano community in the United States.” From some example work photographs available on the exhibition’s listing, one can quickly notice the deep range of printing processes, binding, formats, papers, and genres of photography that these women incorporate into their bookmaking. This is certainly a necessary exhibition for anyone interested in viewing, collecting, or making photography books in revolutionary ways. [Editor’s note, 10/2: The show opens Thursday 10/5, not 10/16.]

Conversation with Nan Goldin and Jack Pierson, moderated by Lyle Rexer at SVA Theatre
Wednesday, 10/11 7pm; 333 W. 23rd St.
On the occasion of Pierson’s solo exhibition at Lisson Gallery, be sure to make time for what will likely be an amazing conversation between two artists and friends. Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start time. Per the event’s words, “This event is free and open to all. Space is limited so arrive early!”
Uprooted, A Group Photo Exhibition at Loisaida Center
Thursday, 10/5 6-8:30pm; 710 E. 9th St.
The exhibit brings together immigrant/migrant and diasporic lens-based artists— some who are based in New York City. Of the artists included is my good friend and artist Destiny Mata who may be best known for her photographs of her home neighborhood, the Lower East Side, and photographing punk show performances throughout New York City (her book The Way We Were (Culture Crush, 2020) showcased punk show work from 2014-2020). Among the other artists included are Kamal Badhey, Wendy Correa, Cristina Ferrigno, Lissy Alta, Judyta Grudzien, Roxana Hurtado, Maylyn 'Zero' Iglesias, Ryan John Lee, and Carmen Mojica.
