LaToya Ruby Frazier at Gladstone Gallery (530 W. 21st St.)
On view until 4/15
I don't know where my head went but I completely dropped the ball on knowing about the opening the other night. In any case, I'm so looking forward to finally seeing a solo exhibition by the Braddock raised artist. “Gladstone is pleased to announce its first exhibition with LaToya Ruby Frazier. The show presents the artist’s most recent work, More Than Conquerors: A Monument for Community Health Workers of Baltimore, Maryland 2021-2022, for the first time in New York after its recent premiere at the 58th Carnegie International, in which it won the highest award. Comprising stainless steel IV poles, archival inkjet prints, and text panels, this installation was created as a celebration of the community health workers (CHWs) of Baltimore, Maryland, and proposes a new approach to monument making in the 21st century.”
Barbara Ess: Inside Out, Opening Reception at Magenta Plains (149 Canal St.)
Thursday, 3/9 6pm-8pm
I was fortunate to have Barbara as my color darkroom class professor in Sophomore year at Bard. She was eccentric, wild, and the first professor to ask me “What alien world are you from when you took this picture?” and to press me on it until I answered her. I remember seeing her with my mom at the Whitney Biennial 2019 before I had actually met her. I whispered to my mom, “That’s Barbara Ess.” Looking forward to seeing Barbara’s work in-person and get the recognition it continues to deserve.

“Join New York Now: Home exhibiting artists Naima Green, Nona Faustine [Side note is that I recently listened to a rich lecture and panel discussion as part of Faustine’s White Shoes (MACK, 2021) release; highly, highly recommend], and Laylah Amatullah Barrayn for a conversation about photography as a creative apparatus for shifting dominant narratives, historical representations, and contemporary discourses about Black women, femme and queer folks, families, and communities in New York and beyond. This discussion about the power of critical Black feminist and queer gazes is moderated by Dr. Tanisha C. Ford, Professor of History at CUNY Graduate Center and author of Dressed in Dreams: A Black Girl’s Love Letter to the Power of Fashion (2019).” General admission $20, students $10.
Till next time,
