The Next Two Weeks at the International Center of Photography
At the ICP, exhibiting artist Muriel Hasbun in conversation with Susan Meiselas, Keisha Scarville's book launch + conversation with Pamela Sneed, and MATTE Magazine Launch!
The Naomi Rosenblum ICP Talks Photographer Lecture Series Presents: Muriel Hasbun with Susan Meiselas
Tuesday, 11/28, 6:30pm-7:30pm at the International Center of Photography (79 Essex St.)
I saw Hasbun’s solo exhibit, Tracing Terruño at ICP on its opening night in September, and was struck by her embrace of alternative processes in her photography. Printing on textiles, and painting “chemigrams” on silver-gelatin prints, Hasbun puts forth emotional and complicated photographs. I interviewed Hasbun’s recent book publisher— Hasbun’s book was published on the occasion of the exhibit— Matarile Ediciones’s Martha Naranjo Sandoval in September about her interests in publishing diasporic photographers and artists.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the artist and Executive Director of Magnum Foundation, Meiselas will navigate through Hasbun’s experimental forms and interests in alternative processes. Tickets are $5 in-person and live-streamed for free online.
Keisha Scarville & Pamela Sneed in conversation, Scarville: lick of tongue, rub of finger, on soft wound, Book Launch
Thursday, 11/30, 6:30pm-8:30pm at the International Center of Photography (79 Essex St.)
As I’ve mentioned before in my newsletter, Scarville was my high school photography teacher and thus my first photography professor. After first seeing her prints at Lesley Heller Gallery in the Lower East Side in 2017, I’ve been grateful to see more at Higher Pictures in DUMBO in 2020, in lecture form at Penumbra Foundation this past year, and internationally from my phone, her solo exhibit at Huxley-Parlor in 2022; fortunately, my friend from high school, Isis sent some videos from the opening night. Her first monograph, lick of tongue, rub of finger, on soft wound, published by MACK is long overdue and I’m excited to celebrate it.
I’m looking forward to hearing poet and artist Sneed explore Scarville’s work with her. I was first introduced to Sneed’s writing when she read on New Year’s Day at the Poetry Project’s annual New Year’s Day Marathon. You can find Scarville’s book here on MACK’s website, as well on-site at ICP following the artist conversation.
MATTE Magazine Launch: Exciting Photography Now
Wednesday, 12/6, 6pm-8pm at the International Center of Photography (79 Essex St.)
Disclaimer note is that I’m included in this issue of MATTE, which is incredibly exciting, especially being featured alongside so many friends, mentors, and my former professors. MATTE Magazine, founded by artist Matthew Leifeit which has traditionally featured one photographer per issue, accepted submissions this past January for this whopping 480-page issue which has been edited between Leifeit and the New York Times photo editor Eve Lyons. Some of my friends and mentors included are Alice Flannery Fall, Farah Al Qasimi, Pierce Sapper, Daniel Arnold, Oji Haynes, Brandon Foushee, Elliot Jerome Brown Jr., Sara Messinger, and Owen McCarter, among so many others. More information on the issue, featured artists, and pre-ordering can be found here; the magazine is available in five cover varieties, for $40.
