Tonight: Martha Naranjo Sandoval talk & William Camargo open studio
Happenings tonight in Bushwick and Midtown, highlighting and showcasing two amazing, contemporary lens-based artists and educators!
Hi all—
Small email today. I wanted to shout out two events happening tonight, featuring two artists I'm grateful to call friends!
Brooklyn Photo Talk: Martha Naranjo Sandoval at Hope Gardens Community Center
422 Central Ave., tonight 6:30-8:30 pm
I met Sandoval first at Dashwood where friend and artist Leor Miller mentioned she worked— the two worked together at the International Center of Photography in the library, where Sandoval is the librarian. I quickly began following Sandoval’s work from her own photography to her indie press, Matarile Ediciones, which publishes lens-based artists who are first and second-generation immigrants, as well as from a recent diaspora. I recently invited Sandoval on my podcast to talk about her many projects— past and present— which should be going online soon.
Open Studio with William Camargo at Penumbra Foundation
36 E. 30th St. 4th Floor, tonight 6-8 pm
I started following Camargo’s work a while ago on Instagram and have since been lucky to meet him at the New York Art Book Fair this past year. I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of his risograph publication, We Been Here (Seaton Street Press, 2022), before it sold out, and get him to sign it! Two weeks ago, Camargo was featured in the New Yorker’s Photo Booth column for his series calling to attention the indigenous histories and environments of Anaheim, California. I’m excited to see him continue exciting projects out here on the East Coast with this open studio.
Email chloe@penumbrafoundation.org to RSVP.
That’s all for now.

Thanks, Rainer!
