Tonight + This Weekend: Katsu Naito, Shala Miller, and "Other Islands" Art Book Fair
An opening reception tonight for Katsu Naito & Mayumi Yamase's show in SoHo, tomorrow for Shala Miller & Malcolm Peacock's opening at Artists Space, and over the weekend is Pratt's Art Book Fair
Katsu Naito & Mayumi Yamase opening reception at The Fridge (280 Mott St.)
Tonight, 3/30 6-9pm
I first learned about Naito’s photographs from local artist and photographer Daniel Eric Weiss when I asked for suggestions and his inspirations. The delicate way he responds to light on people and their expressions and gestures is super intimate and caring. Shoutout to the homie Craig Mathis for showing me yesterday Naito’s zine, West Side Rendezvous (2018) that was published by Dashwood Books. I’ve yet seen Naito’s work in person as prints and really looking forward to this exciting opportunity to see them alongside painter and artist Mayumi Yamase.
Shala Miller & Malcolm Peacock, with Amiri Baraka's Cellar Vigil opening reception at Artists Space (11 Cortlandt Alley)
Tomorrow, 3/31 6-8pm
If you’ve read my past issues you’ll know that I’ve been following Miller’s work for some time now, and have been excited to see their recent exhibition Obsidian earlier this year at Lyle & King. I’m not that familiar with Peacock’s multidisciplinary work but am excited to learn more. Per the press release, “As part of their first New York institutional exhibition, Miller’s and Peacock’s commissions will present complex, generative narratives about the body, specters, ritual, endurance, and the experiential nature of transformation.”
Over the course of the exhibition, Malcolm Peacock will complete one hour long breathing exercises in the gallery during sunrise. Individuals from the public will be invited to participate on an individual basis via registration. Desiring to create grounds of intimate exchange between black subjects, Peacock will utter the names of those brought forth by black individuals through online prayer requests during these exercises.
Other Islands Book Fair at Pratt Institute Student Union (200 Willoughby Ave.)
Saturday, 4/1 & Sunday, 4/2 12-6pm
I stumbled upon a flier for the book fair while checking out my friends and the artists Kate Vitali & Kael Frank’s work at Pratt. It appears to be a creation of Pratt’s Communication Design MFA program and their graduate students, possibly? There’s an incredible list of exhibitors, and friends! Hope to see you there. Information on the exhibitors is available here. There’s an RSVP link but you can also walk right in!
That’s all for now!
